Notifications
Use this guide to control what the app tells you about.
Before you begin
The app asks permission the first time you enter it after signing up. If you said no, turn notifications back on for Famify in your phone's settings — the app can't ask twice.
What you'll be told
| When | Who hears about it |
|---|---|
| A quest is assigned to you | The assignees |
| Someone submits a quest for review | Game Masters, except whoever submitted it |
| Your quest is approved | The Player |
| Your quest needs a redo | The Player |
| An event starts | Everyone in the household |
| A quest is due within four hours | The assignee |
| You finish a goal | The Player who finished it |
| A Player finishes a goal that has a real-world prize | Game Masters and the Owner |
| A goal can't be finished in time | Game Masters and the Owner |
| A goal is about to run out of time | Game Masters and the Owner |
| A goal you're in gets harder | Only the Players it makes harder |
Claimable quests notify nobody when created — there's no one to tell yet.
The expiry reminder is sent once per quest, and only for quests still worth doing. Nothing is sent for something you've already submitted.
The goal-prize push only fires when a real-world prize was actually filed. A goal with no prize attached, or a Game Master completing their own goal, tells nobody but the Player — see Goals. It names who finished and the prize itself, converted to the household's currency for a money prize or minutes for screen time.
Goal warnings wait, then get louder
A goal that can't be finished doesn't push straight away. On the day you create one you've written the objectives and not yet the quests that feed them, so it's correctly unreachable and a push then would arrive while you're still setting up.
Nothing is sent until half the goal's length has gone. The first warning lands there, and a more urgent one at 85% of the way through, or with three days left, whichever comes first — so a two-week goal escalates on its last three days while a twenty-week one escalates on the percentage. Each arrives once.
Fix the goal and the ladder resets, so if it breaks again later you'll be told again rather than met with silence. See Goals.
A Player is never told their goal has become impossible. It's a setup problem, and fixing it is a Game Master's job.
They are told when a Game Master deliberately makes a goal harder — raising an objective's count, or raising their own target. It goes only to the Players the change actually affects, and never to a Player who has already finished, since a raised count can't reach them. A Game Master can switch it off for a particular save, which is there for correcting your own slip minutes after creating a goal. Changing a prize, a title or an emoji never notifies anyone. See Goals.
What you won't be told
Rare drops are never pushed. A notification saying what you found would spoil it before you opened the app, so the reveal waits for you inside instead.
A goal that's finishable early is never pushed either. It's worth knowing when you're building one, but it asks nobody to do anything.
Tapping one
A notification about work waiting for review opens the approvals list. The rest open the app where you left it, since what they're about is already on Home.
Turning things off
Character, then the gear icon, then Notifications. Each of the eleven has its own switch, and each member of the household controls their own — a Game Master can't mute a Player's notifications or be muted by one.
Everything is on until you turn it off.
Common issues
I get nothing at all. Check that notifications are on for Famify in your phone's settings. The switches in the app can't override the phone.
I was told about a quest I'd already done. The expiry reminder goes out four hours before the due time and skips anything already submitted. If you submitted after it was sent, the message was already on its way.
A Game Master got told about their own submission. They shouldn't be — whoever submits is left off that one. Report it if it happens.
I turned something off and still got one. Preferences apply when the notification is sent, not when it arrives. Anything already sent still lands.
